I have one more rule. The name should be no more than two syllables, three if they slide off the tongue easily. But that's because I train my dogs and it is useful to have a name you can say quickly. Oh, and I try to avoid a name with with and 's' because I don't think dogs like that hissy sound.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-793148027282086402.post-25811711373637186392010-03-14T20:54:17.871-04:002010-03-14T20:54:17.871-04:00I like animal names for dogs, too. I just wanted to suggest an additional category that I've always enjoyed: dogs named for other animals. For example, I know a French bulldog mix named Donkey, a cattle dog mix named Bat, and I once named a scruffy little terrier I was fostering Rooster, because he always woke me up at the crack of dawn. By the way, I know two dogs named Pancake, which I would have guessed would be unlikely. Maybe that one is more common than I realized...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-793148027282086402.post-80612419258837846452010-03-09T20:06:41.469-05:002010-03-09T20:06:41.469-05:00Most of my dogs - heck all of my dogs, came with t...Most of my dogs - heck all of my dogs, came with their names. Hootie was named after Hootie and the Blowfish and he lives up to the hoots part of his name. I think he has raccoon in him too. Spunky, an eight year old cocker spaniel when I got him five years ago, also loved to hump a lot. So we called him Humpy Spunky. He was neutered two years ago and has since stopped humping, but he is still very spunky. Sacha, a 110lb golden, is very regal and lives up to his allure of a Russian gentleman. When he is not knocking you over. Katie came with my boyfriend 10 years ago and at the time I had another golden named Ben (originally Regan and that had to go. So Ben and Katie became Ken and Batie by accident. One day I may actually get a dog I name myself, but right now this pack is pretty happy - odd, but happy. Love your blog by the way.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13712459136184782234noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-793148027282086402.post-59953775183236545202010-03-09T18:31:34.075-05:002010-03-09T18:31:34.075-05:00OK, so you guaranteed yourself at least one commen...OK, so you guaranteed yourself at least one comment by including a picture of my handsome Drummer!

I, too, am often dismayed at how little thought people put into their dog's name. My kennel has seen many dogs names Max, Buddy, Sophie and Duke. I did once meet a lovely GSD named Macopine, and a friend has dogs named Calamity, Trouble and Bother. The same friend talks of naming some future dog "Hallelujah" just for the fun of standing out on the back porch at midnight singing out the name to the neighbors' consternation.

My all-time favorite name choice, though, goes to Aunt Faye for naming her barrel-bodied, low-slung brown dog 'Tater'.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
